Matthew Krishanu
Matthew Krishanu is a painter based in Blackhorse Lane Studios, Walthamstow. The painting on the cover (Two Boys on a Boat, 2018, oil on paper, 21 x 30cm) is the first version of an image Matthew has painted three times. A much larger version on canvas (Riverboat, 2020) is part of this year’s John Moores Painting Prize exhibition, and a small version on board, Two Boys on a Boat, 2019, will be included in the Hayward Gallery’s exhibition Painting in the UK opening this September. The painting depicts Matt hew and his brother on a rowing boat on a river in Bangladesh, where he spent his childhood. Matthew’s recent paintings construct narratives exploring memory, childhood, religion and colonial histories.
Matthew has twice been included in the John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2018 & 2020), and has works in collections including the Arts Council Collection, Government Art Collection, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Huddersfield Art Gallery, The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, India, and Jiangsu Art Museum, China.
